Faculty members of the department of Special Education are active in teaching and research. The Faculty have the necessary education and technical depth to support the program. Teachers are experienced and complete the curriculum adequately.
§ Dr. Ismail Saad:
Dr. Ismail Saad joined the Department of Special Education in 1988, as Project Director. Dr. Saad, has a Masters degree in Education from George P. Body College for teachers U.S.A. He completed his Ph.D., (Education) from Vander Bilt University, Nashville Henn, U.S.A. He established the Department of Education, University of Karachi in 1979-80. He has served as a Professor in different Universities for last 53 years. He was the formal Vice Chancellor of Humdard University. Currently he is serving as a Dean, Faculty of Education & Social Sciences in Iqra University, Karachi. He has published numerous books and research articles. Dr. Saad is a regular Visiting Faculty of the Department and a great contributor in academic and non-academic matters of the Department. dr_saad@yahoo.com
§ Dr. Shagufta Shahzadi:
Dr. Shagufta Shahzadi, daughter of, Late Mr. Aziz Ahmed Siddiqui, did her Masters in Psychology from University of Karachi in 1987 and joined the Department of Special Education, University of Karachi, as a Lecturer. During her stay in the Department, She enrolled herself for Ph. D and was awarded the degree of Ph.D. in 1996. Her area of specialization is Mental Retardation. Her research interests are: Early Intervention, Family support programmes, Community Involvement Projects, Inclusive Education and Multi team working with professionals. She is author of a few books and has published numerous research papers. She did her Post Doctoral Research from University of South Florida, U.S.A. in 2005. She is involved in National and International Research Projects and serves various NGO’s as advisor in the country. She has successfully Supervised many M. § Dr. Shahida Sajjad:
Dr. Shahida, daughter of, Sajjad Ullah Khan, did her M.A. in Education from University of Karachi. She joined the department as Lecturer in 1988 and specialized in Hearing Impairment. She did her Ph.D in 2005. She is author of many papers and has presented many papers both in National and International conferences. § Dr. Anjum Bano Kazmi:
Dr. Anjum, daughter of, S. Azher Ali, did her M. Ed. from Govt. College of Education in 1983. She joined the Department of Special Education as a Lecturer and developed her skills in Visual handicap, Physical Handicap and learning Disability. She enrolled for Ph.D. and completed her Ph. D in 2007. She is author of many research papers and books on Special Education. Her area of interest is Classroom Teaching and Administration. m_rkazmi@yahoo.com
§ Dr. Nasir Sulman:
Dr. Nasir Sulman, son of Mohammad Younus Qureshi, did his M.A. in Special Education in 1990 from University of Karachi. He served Department of Special Education as Co-operative Teacher from 1991 to 1995. He joined Hamdard University, in 1997 and worked as Research Associate, till 2004. Presently he is associated with Department of Special Education since March 2004 as Assistant Professor. He is author of several books and research papers. § Dr. Aqeela Khatoon:
Dr. Aqeela Khatoon, daughter of Wakil Ahmed, joined the Department of Special Education, University of Karachi in March 2004. She has a Masters Degree in Special Education from University of Karachi. Earlier, she was associated with an NGO working for Parent Empowerment and Professional Training of Teachers. She has published a few research papers and has prepared handbook of Disabilities. § Dr. Kaniz Fizza Vaqar Hashmi:
Dr. Fizza, daughter of, Mr. Shahid Hussain, did her graduation from University of Karachi. She completed her M. Ed. In education form College of Education, University of Karachi. She joined the Department of Special Education as a Lecturer and was upgraded as Assistant Professor. She started her Ph.D. in 2003 and got the degree in 2006. Her area of specialization is Hearing Impairment, especially Sign Language. She is writer of several research papers and a few handbooks. § Dr. Kaniz Fatima:
Dr. Kaniz Fatima, daughter of, Mohammad Ismail, completed her M.Ed. from College of Education and joined Department of Education, as a Cooperative teacher in 1985. She joined the Department of Special Education as a Lecturer in 1988 and specialized her skills in the teaching of Blind and Partially Sighted Children. She enrolled her self for Ph. § Dr. Zohra Begum:
Dr. Zohra Begum, daughter of, M.A. Hamid Baig,did her M. Ed from Govt College of Education,University of Karachi. She did her M. Phill from Hamdard University in 2002 and her Ph. D from University of Karachi in 2005. She is serving the Department of Special Education from 1988 and has specialized in Hearing Impairment. Faculty Development Program:
University of Karachi has started Faculty Development Program with the help of HEC. Under this program non Ph.D. Faculty member are given opportunities to improve their qualification from technologically advanced countries of the world. Post-Doctoral facilities are available to the faculty holding Ph.D. degrees. Furthermore, University of Karachi also helps to organize professional activities such as workshops, seminars and conferences.
To help the faculty members of department of Special Education in their pursuit to excel in their profession, the department and institution has devised the following strategies:
- Fair and timely selection, appointment and promotion of Faculty as per HEC criteria.
- Good working environment promoting research and development.
- The faculty has good relationship with NGOs and social institutions in the country and abroad.

Institutional Facilities and Support:
Institutional facilities including library, classrooms and offices are adequate enough to support the objectives of the program.
Seminar Library
The seminar library of the department provides the students with over 3000 books, journals, magazines, and other national and international periodicals. The University has a central library, which is the largest University Library in Pakistan. The students of the Department avail all the facilities provided by the central library of the University too.
The library of Special Education was developed in 1988-89. The library has a useful collection of Books on Special Education and related subjects for reference purposes. The library has wide variety of books on related subjects like Psychology, Education, Sociology, Community Development etc. Nearly 3000 books are in the library along with 600 Research Thesis produced by Masters, M. Phil. and Ph.D. Students of the Department.
Many Research Journals are also available in the library namely Pakistan Journal of Special Education and other local journal. Many periodicals are also available on related subjects. The Department library also has borrowed latest books from Dr. Mehmood Hussain Library.
Computer Lab
The Department of Special Education / has a computer laboratory, which provides assistance in information processing facilities. The students are given opportunities to develop and improve upon their skills. The department, however, do not have Internet facility in the Computer lab.

Institutional Support
The financial resource for the program is sufficient enough to provide an environment in which the program can achieve its objectives and retain its strength. The financial resources for regular purchase of books are very limited which needs to be enhanced. The major financial source of the Department is the University of Karachi, which allocates budget for the Department, whereas the University relies on HEC funding.
The University of Karachi provides financial resource to maintain library and computing facilities. The department, however, does not have separate fund of its own to maintain and upgrade library and computing facilities. HEC is also requested to provide additional resources for further strengthening of the Department of Special Education.
Student Support and Advising:
Students of the Department of Special Education have adequate support to complete the program in time and have ample opportunity to interact with their teachers of respective courses and receive timely advice about program requirements and career development.
‘Students Advisor’ is available to all students for course decision and career choices. The student Advisor and the Chairperson help the students by providing information to the graduate students about possible career opportunities. Besides, the department’s assistance, the University also has a programme of Guidance and Counseling for the students.
Students support is provided by exploring facilities to the recruiting companies for on-campus recruiting. The Chairperson places the opportunities regarding membership in technical and professional societies on the Notice Board.
